The Understand Group is a formation of the British Army within Land Forces Troops. The Army describes it as "The Intelligence engine at the heart of the Field Army", responsible "for running the intelligence cycles to support Commander Field Army and the Field Army" (see Field Army). According to the Army, it "delivers discrete capabilities (Counter-Intelligence and Material & Personnel Exploitation), and assures Army G2 enterprise linking it at the operational level with the RAF and Navy Intelligence Branches, Defence Intelligence, Partners Across Government and Allies".[1]
Units
The Army lists the Understand Group's units as:[2]
- Land Intelligence Fusion Centre
- Specialist Group Military Intelligence
- 2 Military Intelligence Battalion
- 3 Military Intelligence Battalion
The Army's Intelligence Corps pages give fuller names and locations for the two battalions. 2 Military Intelligence (Exploitation) Battalion is a Regular unit. It has a Reserve company, 25 Military Intelligence Company, at Blighmont Army Reserve Centre in Southampton. The Army calls it its "lead unit for forensic technical exploitation" and "the Army's sole specialist CI collection asset". 3 Military Intelligence Battalion is an Army Reserve unit with four companies in London and Cambridge: 31 MI Company at Worship Street, London; 32 MI Company in Cambridge; and 33 and 34 MI Companies in Hampstead. The same pages still place both battalions "under the operational command of the 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade" (see 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade).[3]
The battalions belong to the Intelligence Corps. This is a capbadge, not a formation: its headquarters is at Chicksands, and the Army says its analysts "are embedded in all parts of the Military".[4]
Place in the Army
According to the British Army, Land Forces Troops "centrally command high-demand, low-volume capabilities. It consists of the Surveillance Group, Understand Group and Cyber Electro-Magnetic Activities Effects Group. Also within Land Forces Troops is the Land Special Operations Force and 11th Brigade."[2] These are the Surveillance Group, made up of 32 Regiment Royal Artillery; the Cyber and Electro Magnetic Activities Effects Group; the Land Special Operations Force; and 11th Brigade.[2] The Army's pages are still headed "Field Army Troops" (see Field Army).[2][1] In March 2026 the Army announced that the post of Commander Field Army would be retitled Commander Land Forces, and that Lieutenant General Zac Stenning would take it.[5]
On that basis, the current chain of command is:
- Specialist Group Military Intelligence, the Land Intelligence Fusion Centre, 2 Military Intelligence Battalion and 3 Military Intelligence Battalion
- Understand Group
- Land Forces Troops
- Commander Land Forces (formerly Commander Field Army)
Specialist Group Military Intelligence: then and now
No official source found gives the date the Understand Group was formed, or says whether it replaced the 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade. The earlier chain for Specialist Group Military Intelligence (SGMI), in 2020, can be traced only in part from official sources:
- In March 2013 the Army 2020 plan put 1, 2 and 4 Military Intelligence Battalions under Force Troops Command's 1st Intelligence and Surveillance Brigade, with headquarters at Upavon.[6]
- In June 2015 the Army listed all seven Military Intelligence Battalions in Force Troops Command. It listed the Land Intelligence Fusion Centre as part of 4 Military Intelligence Battalion.[7]
- On 1 August 2019 Force Troops Command was redesignated 6th (United Kingdom) Division, which included the 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade.[8]
- The Army's Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group page says that, under the Future Soldier plans, the group "will command" SGMI and the Land Intelligence Fusion Centre.[9]
- Today the Army lists SGMI under the Understand Group in Land Forces Troops.[2]
No official source found states SGMI's parent formation in 2020. The Army's ISR Group page is written in the future tense and remains online alongside the Understand Group page. Neither page explains how the two formations relate.
Other Army intelligence units
Other Intelligence Corps units sit outside the Understand Group:
- 1 Military Intelligence Battalion is "under the operational command of 1st (UK) Division" (see 1st (United Kingdom) Division).[3]
- 4 and 5 Military Intelligence Battalions are given by the Army under the 1st ISR Brigade, with 4 MI Battalion supporting 3 (UK) Division. No more recent official placement has been found.[3]
- 6 Military Intelligence Battalion has been under the Land Special Operations Force since 14 April 2026, according to Army freedom of information responses of June and September 2026.[10][11]
- 7 Military Intelligence Battalion, an Army Reserve unit "based in the south", has no parent formation in any official source found.[3]
Military Intelligence Services
On 12 December 2025 the Ministry of Defence launched the Military Intelligence Services (MIS). It said MIS would "bring every intelligence unit and organisation within Defence under one organisation for the first time, including units from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force". MIS would sit under the command of Cyber & Specialist Operations Command and the leadership of the Chief of Defence Intelligence.[12] The British Army's own pages describe the Understand Group as part of Land Forces Troops, supporting the commander of the Field Army.[1][2] No published source found explains how the two arrangements fit together.
