Simon Schreiber (Hebrew: Shimon Simcha Schreiber-Sofer; 9 February 1912, Antwerp – 21 January 2009, Antwerp) was a Belgian-born Orthodox businessman who used London addresses on Heathland Road, N16, shuttled to New York in the 1950s, and sat as a director of the Zucker-line charity company Ellador Limited until the week of his death. Family trees style him a descendant of the Chatam Sofer / Pressburg Schreiber-Sofer line. He was buried at Har HaMenuchot, Jerusalem, on 27 January 2009.

He is the proved senior generation on the Joel Schreiber (March 1949) / Helen Zucker / Ellador Limited board. He is not proved as father of the 1986 Old Bailey pair David Schreiber (August 1952) and Emanuel Schreiber, nor of Osias Schreiber. Those men share a Stamford Hill district and a surname; they do not share an officer ID or a civil-index parent line with this Simon.

Lineage and rite

Trees give parents as Akiva Dov Schreiber-Sofer (born 20 July 1878, Belno / Gostynin, Poland; resident Antwerp; died 10 September 1942, Auschwitz) and Sarah Chaya “Prys” / Preiss / Preiss-Schreiber (c. 1890–1942). A wartime Jodenregister card for a related Mirjam Schreiber (The Hague, 10 August 1916) names Akiba Beer of Gostynus (20 July 1878) and Sarah Prys of Würzburg, and traces a grandfather Joel of Mattersdorf — the Sofer/Schreiber toponyms of the Pressburg orbit.

The family style is Schreiber-Sofer: the surname of Moses Sofer (Chatam Sofer, 1762–1839) of Pressburg. That dynasty is Hungarian / Pressburg Orthodoxy — opposition to Reform, Pressburg yeshiva, later Erlau and Jerusalem branches — not a Hasidic court in the Ger or Satmar sense. Antwerp’s Haredi street may have put him next to Hasidic neighbours; the documents call him Sofer, not a Ger or Satmar rebbe’s chasid.

Siblings named on open trees include Chava / Eva Schreiber and Miriam Taub (Schreiber). A brother Yoel / Joel Schreiber also appears on Geni; do not collapse him with Joel Schreiber (March 1949) without a certificate.

Marriages and children

Open Geni / MyHeritage give two wives:

• first, Esther Yehudis Kohn (née Schmidt);
• second, Chana Miriam Herman (born 1921 in some trees), daughter of Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Herman, a Paris shochet.

A half-sibling tagged Hershtik (Schreiber) sits on the first-marriage side. Trees credit five children of the second marriage, mostly private. One Geni card of a child of Shimon Simcha and Chana Miriam lists that child’s own children as Benedikt (Schreiber) and Hamburger (Schreiber).

That matches the Ellador Limited next generation: Rachel Benedikt (July 1975) and Chavi Hamburger (April 1978), daughters of Joel Schreiber (March 1949) and Helen Zucker. Working identification: this Simon is the father (or, if the private card is one generation off, the grandfather) of the Ellador chair. Passenger lists already mark him married by March 1955; Joel Schreiber (March 1949) requires a marriage before that birth, so the first wife is the 1940s mother unless a certificate says otherwise.

Nationality and the US oddity

Belgian-born (Antwerp vreemdelingendossiers R15600 and R25988, Berchem, 9 February 1912). On UK incoming lists he is State-less (1954) with last residence USA and future “Foreign Countries”; on the March 1955 outgoing America he is Stateless, last permanent residence Belgium, intended future USA. By the 2 March 1960 incoming United States he is nationality U S A, last and future USA. Companies House later files nationality Usa and an Antwerp correspondence address.

The sequence is stateless Holocaust-generation paper, then a US passport used on the Atlantic run, while the house and the grave stay European (Heathland Road; died Antwerp; buried Jerusalem). It does not make his UK sons “Americans” on Companies House; Joel Schreiber (March 1949) files British. Emanuel Schreiber’s 1985 “US citizen” press tag is a different man.

Heathland Road is Stamford Hill, a short walk from 147 Stamford Hill, not the same building. Occupation moves from “Business” to “Dealer” — consistent with Antwerp diamond-quarter trade; a later Belgian company Schreiber Diamonds BV (Schupstraat) exists but is not proved as his personal vehicle on these scans.

Ellador Limited

Incorporated 20 May 1981; charity 283202. Simon is the only USA / Antwerp officer on that file. The living board is the Zucker-line children and in-laws of Joel Schreiber (March 1949): Rivka Schreiber (November 1971), Jacob Schreiber (June 1974), Rachel Benedikt, Chavi Hamburger, Yisroel Schreiber, Sara Reisner. That is the documentary hook from this Simon into the UK company set. Objects allow work “in the United Kingdom and abroad”; burial in Jerusalem is personal, not a Commission country-list for Ellador.
