Alex Chisholm
Alex Chisholm became permanent secretary for the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in September 2016. [1] He previously served as the permanent secretary for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) from May 2016, before the department merged with the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) to form BEIS in July 2016. [2]
Career
Prior to his appointment, Chisholm was chief executive of the UK's Competition & Markets Authority from 2013-2016, and commissioner at Ireland’s Commission for Communications Regulation from 2007-2013. He has served as a trustee and deputy chair of Breadline Africa, a charity dealing with extreme poverty.
He also has 12 years experience working in business, beginning at Pearson plc, and then Financial Times Group, eCountries Inc, Ecceleration Ltd, Heritage Gardening Ltd, SkupeNet Ltd, Enterprise Ireland and Binary Ventures.
His early career was spent in the Civil Service which he joined as a fast-streamer and then worked in the Department of Trade & Industry and the Office of Fair Trading. [3]
