Scottish Development International (SDI) was formed in 2001 to attract direct foreign investment to Scotland as part of the Scottish Executive’s new "Smart Successful Scotland" strategy for Scotland’s international economic development. Scottish development International replaced the former inward investment group Locate in Scotland and the former export promotion group, Scottish Trade International.
With its headquarters in Glasgow, SDI is funded entirely by the government, and is controlled by both the Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise. In order to best draw foreign investment to Scotland, SDI has offices throughout the UK, mainland Europe, North America and Asia.

In August 2002 Scottish Enterprise established the International Advisory Board (IAB) which comprises senior business figures who are Scots or people with a strong affinity to Scotland. Members were invited to join in recognition of their experience, positions of international prominence and influence in their respective industries and their willingness to contribute to Scotland's wealth creation agenda.
Chaired by Sir John Ward, the International Advisory Board complements the role of the Scottish Enterprise Board by contributing international business advice and market development perspective to Scotland's economic development drive.
The track records and achievements of the members of the International Advisory Board offer a uniquely exciting opportunity to advance Scotland's economic development in a manner that is practical, innovative and inspiring.

IAB Member Biographies

Executive Vice President, People & Places and Chief Human Resources Officer, Sun Microsystems Inc.

Crawford BeveridgeCrawford was Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise for nine years to 2000. He is now responsible for driving leading-edge human resource programmes as a member of Sun Microsystems’s executive committee.

Born in Edinburgh in 1945, he graduated from Edinburgh University and has an MSc in Industrial Administration from Bradford University Management Centre.

In 1968 he joined Hewlett-Packard at South Queensferry and worked with the company until 1977 in a variety of posts in Geneva, California, and Oregon. He returned to Switzerland to help set up Digital Equipment Corporation’s European manufacturing sites and later as European Personnel Director.

In 1982, he became vice president of Human Resources at Analog Devices in Boston. Three years later he joined Sun Microsystems as vice president of Corporate Resources. He is a Board Member of Autodesk Inc.


PAUL BOYLE Chief Executive, Financial Reporting Council

Paul BoylePaul became CEO of the FRC in January 2004. Prior to that Paul was Chief Operations Officer of the Financial Services Authority from 1998 until 2004.

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) is the UK's independent regulator for corporate reporting and governance. Its aim is to promote confidence in corporate reporting and governance. Its five key objectives are to promote:

  • high quality corporate reporting
  • high quality auditing
  • high standards of corporate governance
  • the integrity, competence and transparency of the accountancy profession
  • its effectiveness as a unified independent regulator

The FRC is a unified regulator with a wide range of functions:

  • setting, monitoring and enforcing accounting and auditing standards
  • statutory oversight and regulation of auditors
  • operating an independent investigation and discipline scheme for public interest cases
  • overseeing the regulatory activities of the professional accountancy bodies
  • promoting high standards of corporate governance

A Scottish trained Chartered Accountant, Paul studied at Glasgow University. Before joining the FSA he worked with Cadbury Schweppes plc, WH Smith Group plc and consultants Coopers & Lybrand.

  • Don Cruickshank Don is currently Chairman of the US company, FormScape Inc. FormScape is dedicated to helping companies streamline business information processes across their customers, suppliers and employees. FormScape’s document process automation solutions enable companies to easily and rapidly create, manage and communicate critical business documents seamlessly at the convergence of print, electronic and multiple data systems.

Don is also currently an independent director of Qualcomm.

Don was Chairman of the London Stock Exchange from May 2000 until July 2003. Under his leadership, the London Exchange – the most international of all Exchanges with more than 470 companies from over 60 countries – set itself the objective to be the clear “market of choice” in the European time zone.

After an early career in finance and marketing project work with Alcan and consultancy with McKinsey, Don became Commercial Director of Times Newspapers and then General Manager of the Sunday Times. From there he became Managing Director (Finance, Administration and Planning) of the Information and Entertainment division of Pearson plc (which included the Financial Times, Goldcrest, Longman, Penguin and Westminster Press in its portfolio). In 1984 he moved to Virgin Group as Managing Director and in 1989 he became Chief Executive of the NHS in Scotland. In 1993 he returned to London as Director General of OFTEL until 1998. From late 1997 Don became Chairman of Action 2000, the UK Government’s Millennium Bug campaign and from 1998 Chairman of the Government’s UK Banking Review. In June 1999 he became Chairman of Scottish Media Group plc continuing until June 2004.

Born in 1942, he graduated MA from Aberdeen University and MBA from Manchester Business School. He chaired the UK Banking Review from 1998 to 2000 and for five years before that was Director General of the Office of Telecommunications.


PHILIP CARMICHAEL Board of Directors, Fusion Systems Asia & Business Operations Manager, Longreach Venture Capital

Philip CarmichaelPhilip Carmichael recently parted company with Lexmark International. Until very recently he was President of Lexmark Asia and a Lexmark Vice President. Tokyo based, he was responsible for all of the company’s strategic and operational performance in 22 Asian countries, running Australia and Japan.

He is currently is involved with providing operational and execution support to a venture capital firm based in Asia (Longreach) and an outside Director of Fusion Systems, an IT outsourcing company specialized in providing full IT support to Fortune 500 companies active in China.

Having lived in Asia for 25 years he is a fluent Mandarin speaker and has spent his career helping US high technology companies develop sustainable business in the Asian region.

Before joining Lexmark, he was Vice President and Regional Director for Asia at Rockwell International, a global electronic control and communications company. From 1991 to 1996 he was President of EG&G Services Ltd, a major scientific instrumentation, high technology equipment and components manufacturer. In his five-year tenure, he started two high-technology manufacturing joint ventures and initiated the first private enterprise acquisition by a foreign company. He holds a Bachelor of Science in International Business Management from the University of Maryland Far East Division, and attended the University of Chicago 190 MBA program from 1996 to 1997. Among other interests, he is on the Board of Governors, Project HOPE HK Foundations, a U.S. based Charity providing assistance in 100 countries.


CHRISTOPHER (KIP) FORBES Vice Chairman, Forbes Inc

Christopher 'Kip' ForbesKip has been Vice Chairman of Forbes, a leading provider of business information for executives and affluent investors, since 1989 having become a director ten years earlier.

With Forbes Magazine Group President, James Berrien, he shares responsibility for the advertising and promotion departments of Forbes, the flagship magazine founded by his grandfather in 1917.

He was born in Morristown, New Jersey and graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a BA degree in Art History. He was a Curator of the Forbes Magazine Collection and has written several books and catalogues.

Kip is Vice Chairman of the Business Committee for the Arts and sits on the boards of several arts and museum institutions. He sits on the Advisory Council of The Victorian Society in America. He is married to Astrid and they have one daughter and two grandchildren.

DR DENNIS GILLINGS Founder & Chairman, Quintiles Transnational Corporation

Doctor Dennis GillingsDennis began providing statistical consulting and data management services to pharmaceutical clients in 1974 while he was Professor of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina. Quintiles arose from his consulting activities, was incorporated in 1982, and became a publicly traded company on NASDAQ in 1994.

Today, Dennis focuses on value-added entrepreneurial growth through partnerships and alliances between Quintiles and leading companies in the pharma and biotech industries. He is very active in the company’s expansion, particularly in Japan and Asia-Pacific.

He received a Diploma in Mathematical Statistics from Cambridge University and a PhD in Mathematics from Exeter University. He serves on several boards, including Triangle Pharmaceuticals Inc and ICAgen Inc and is a member of a number of healthcare, medical and university councils in North Carolina.


HUGH GRANT Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, Monsanto Company

Hugh GrantHugh currently leads the world-wide business operations of Monsanto, the St Louis-based global provider of agricultural products. The company, which is dedicated to growing safe and more abundant food with less pesticides, is a leading researcher into the use of technology platforms based on plant genomics and genetic modification of seeds.

Hugh was previously Managing Director of all Monsanto business units in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Before that, he led the marketing, sales and technology organizations in Europe and North America.

He holds a BS (Honours) degree in Molecular Biology and Agricultural Zoology from Glasgow University, an MS degree from Edinburgh University and an MBA from the International Management Centre in Buckingham.

Hugh is on the Board of Governors of the United Way of St Louis and the International Policy Council on Agriculture, Food and Trade.


PROFESSOR GORDON HEWITT Distinguished Professor of International Business & Corporate Strategy, University of Michigan Business School

Gordon is a leading consultant in corporate strategy whose work aims to enable executives to handle higher levels of competitive complexity and uncertainty. Born and educated in Glasgow, he divides his time between the USA and Europe.

He is Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Glasgow where he started his career and is Visiting Professor of Business Strategy at Manchester Business School.

He advises the Sony Corporation on the development of global strategy for the new era of digital convergence and entertainment. He works with Diageo on world-wide strategy and other clients include Citigroup, IBM, Motorola, Honeywell, Akzo Nobel, XL Capital, Zurich Financial Services, Dimension Data, Barclays Bank, Harley-Davidson & American Standard.

His book Economics of the Market is a standard text in competitive theory and practice. He represented Scotland as an international golfer.




ROBERT (BOB) L. MCDOWELL Corporate Vice President Worldwide Services, Microsoft Corporation

Robert L. McDowellBob joined Microsoft in 1990 to establish its Consulting Services and grew that organization to over 1,200 people located in over 40 countries.

In 1995, he became Vice President of the Enterprise Customer Unit, covering the sales and marketing strategies for technology and services to the largest corporate customers. Before joining Microsoft, he spent seven years as a partner with Ernst & Young, seven years in the financial services industry and eight years in the Department of Defense.

Bob has served on the board of Visio Corporation, Entevo Corporation and as a member of the Virginia Commission on Information Technology. He is a board member of the Virginia Military Institute Foundation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Virginia Military Institute and a Master of Science degree in business administration from Boston University.


SIR TOM MCKILLOP Deputy Chairman, Royal Bank of Scotland plc

Sir Tom McKillopSir Tom recently left his position of CEO of AstraZeneca taking on his new role as deputy-Chairman of the Royal bank of Scotland in September 2005.

AstraZeneca was formed on 6 April 1999 through the merger of Astra AB of Sweden and Zeneca Group PLC of the UK – two companies with similar science-based cultures and a shared vision of the pharmaceutical industry. Before the merger, Tom had been Chief Executive Officer Designate of the Zeneca Group since 1998, having previously served as Executive Director of the Zeneca Group and Chief Executive Officer of Zeneca Pharmaceuticals.

He joined ICI's Corporate Research Laboratory in 1969, following research work after obtaining a PhD and BSc Hons in Chemistry. He moved to ICI Pharmaceuticals Division where he held a number of positions including Technical Director with international responsibility for research, development and production.

He is a non-executive director with Lloyds TSB Group PLC. He is also Vice President of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, Pro-Chancellor of Leicester University and Chairman of the British Pharma Group and the NorthWest Science Council.

He is married with three children and his leisure interests include sport, reading, carpentry and music.


HELEN SAYLES Senior Vice President – HR & Administration. Liberty Mutual Group

Helen SaylesHelen Sayles is Senior Vice President and Manager of Human Resources and Administration for Liberty Mutual Group. She began her career with Liberty Mutual in the information systems area and her career has encompassed a broad range of functions and responsibilities.

Helen is responsible for human resources policy development and implementation, including human resource development, compensation, benefits, employee relations, employment and health services. As a long-time advocate of performance measurement and rigorous, business-linked human resource processes, she has been responsible for implementing such initiatives as strategy-driven metrics and web-based human resource technology that supports employee and manager self-service.

Her responsibilities also include development and implementation of the company’s real estate and administrative services strategy. Recent initiatives include a comprehensive restructuring of the delivery of these services to the organization to ensure more direct management accountability, and the implementation of technology-based processes to ensure effective and competitive service.

Helen was born and brought up in Scotland and educated at Kilmarnock Academy, receiving her BA in Business from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.


KIRAN MAZUMDAR-SHAW Chairperson and Managing Director, Biocon India Limited

Kiran Mazumdar-ShawKIRAN MAZUMDAR-SHAW has steered Biocon's transition from an industrial enzymes company to an integrated biopharmaceutical company recognised as India's pioneering biotech enterprise.

As Chairperson and Mission Leader of CII's National Task Force on Biotechnology she has led several delegations to propel India into the global super league of biotech trailblazers. She chairs Karnataka's Vision Group on Biotechnology and also serves on the Board of Science Foundation, Ireland. Co-author of several patents in Biotechnology, she been instrumental in bringing government, industry and academia together to chart a clear growth path for Biotechnology in India.

She is the recipient of several prestigious awards including Best Woman Entrepreneur, Model Employer, Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Life Sciences and Healthcare, Outstanding Citizen, Technology Pioneer, etc. Her most cherished award is the PADMASHRI, presented to her by the erstwhile President of India, for her pioneering efforts in Industrial Biotechnology.

She is married to John Shaw, a Scotsman and Indophile, who has since joined Biocon as Director, International Business.


KEVIN SNEADER Director, McKinsey and Company

Kevin SneaderBASED in McKinsey's New Jersey Office, Kevin Sneader's work is primarily in the retail and packaged goods sector in the Tri-State area and its North American grocery practice.

His work with a range of clients is primarily in the retail sector and has covered major strategic assignments in the US, Asia, the UK and Europe.

Kevin holds a First Class Law degree from Glasgow University and won a Kennedy Memorial Scholarship to Harvard where he received an MBA with High Distinction, was a Fulbright Scholar, was designated a Baker Scholar and was awarded the Dean MacMillan award for Outstanding Leadership. While there, he worked in the strategic planning unit at PepsiCo.'s world headquarters in New York.

Kevin is married with two children and lives in Manhattan. His interests include football where he eagerly awaits the resurgence of the Scotland team.


SHERIDAN G. SNYDER Chairman, Upstate

Sgeridan G. SnyderMR. SNYDER has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Upstate since 1995. Upstate develops innovative cell signaling products, technology platforms and services to accelerate life science research and drug discovery efforts, employing nearly 250 employees.

He is a 40-year veteran start-up entrepreneur, having founded up to 12 companies. In 1989 he founded Biotage now part of DYAX (NASDAQ: DYAX), a supplier of large scale chromatography systems. In 1981 he also co-founded and served as President - CEO of Genzyme.

He created a new form of novice tennis competition for inner cities with Arthur Ashe and Charles Pasarell in 1968. This organization is in 110 cities, services 250,000 youths annually and is now administered by the United States Tennis Association.

He is a member of the Ivy Charitable Foundation (formerly known as W. Alton Jones Cell Science). He received his Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Dundee in 2002 and his B.A. in French from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.

SIR JACKIE STEWART OBE President, British Racing Drivers' Club

Sir Jackie StewartJACKIE 'The Flying Scot' Stewart was born in Dunbartonshire in 1939. Before entering the world of motor racing he was an Olympic class clay shot and competed for Scotland and Great Britain. He was recruited by Ken Tyrrell for Cooper in 1963 and in 1965 he entered the Formula One scene by joining Graham Hill at BRM. He won his first race at Monza and finished third in the World Championship.

He re-joined Tyrrell in 1968, won his first World Championship in the following year, his second in 1971 and his third in 1973, setting a record of racing victories that would stand for 14 years.

Sir Jackie has been inducted into Scotland's Sports Hall of Fame and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. He was one of the earliest major advocates for improved safety in motor racing and remains an eloquent spokesman for the sport.

In 1997, he returned to the sport as chairman of Stewart Grand Prix, which he created with his son. The Team won its first Grand Prix victory in only its third season and finished forth in the Constructor's World Championship in the same year. The Team was bought by Ford Motor Company in 1999.

Sir Jackie is on several boards and is President of the British Racing Drivers' Club, the owners of Silverstone.


SIR JOHN WARD CBE Chairman, Scottish Enterprise

Sir John Ward was appointed by the First Minister for Scotland as Chairman of Scottish Enterprise in February, 2004. Educated at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College, Sir John is a Chartered Accountant who gained significant business experience with a number of appointments during his long career with IBM UK.

He has since held a number of public appointments including the Chairmanship of CBI Scotland, Quality Scotland Foundation and Scottish Homes. Current appointments include Chairmanship of Dunfermline Building Society, the SQA and European Assets Trust NV – a listed company based in Holland.

Sir John was awarded the CBE in 1995 Birthday Honours and received a Knighthood in 2002 New Years Honours for Services to Public Life in Scotland.
