The Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) is the head of Defence Intelligence (DI) within the Ministry of Defence (MOD). The CDI is either a serving three-star military officer or a senior civil servant and serves as the MOD’s ‘intelligence process owner’, responsible for the overall coordination of intelligence activities across the Armed Forces and single Service Commands.[1]

Role

The CDI leads an organisation of approximately 5,000 staff that provides all-source intelligence assessments to support military operations, policy-making and the wider UK intelligence community (in partnership with GCHQ, MI5 and MI6). The role is supported by two deputies: the civilian Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence (analysis and production) and the military Director of Cyber Intelligence and Information Integration (collection and capability).[1]

Known postholders

The post was initially titled Director-General Intelligence until 1984.[2]
