David Amess

David Amess is a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Conservative Party. [1]

Amess entered Parliament on 9 June 1983 in a General Election with a majority of 8,959 votes. He represents the constituency of Southend West. [2] He is also an active member of the pro-Israel lobbying group the Conservative Friends of Israel[3] and appeared at a Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) rally in New York in 2010 where he introduced the National Council of Resistance of Iran's (the MEK's front group) leader Maryam Rajavi.[4]

Support for the Mujahedin-e Khalq

Amess is a member of the British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom (BPCIF) and has publicly and openly supported the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK or PMOI),[5] the umbrella organization for groups like the BPCIF, and the National Council of Resistance of Iran, which Amess is also affiliated with. Although the MEK has little support among Iranians, Amess publicly advocates for its legitimization and lobbies to have it removed from government lists (including the UK and the US) which categorize it as a terrorist organization. Writes Amess:

Removing the terrorist tag would enjoy the backing of Congress. A bipartisan group of more than 80 members co-sponsored House Resolution 1431, explicitly calling for the delisting of the PMOI, "thereby denying the regime the pretext to crack down on dissidents inside Iran".[5]
