The Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA) operates under the strategic direction of the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).[1]

Background
The function of the CNPA is to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) [2] and to ensure to ensure that the Constabulary meets the policing requirements of primary stakeholders in the nuclear industry. The CNC is the police force responsible for protecting civil nuclear licensed sites and safe-guarding nuclear materials and nuclear site operators. Whereas other police forces are overseen by the Home Office, the CNC is under the authority of the CNPA.

The CNPA was headed by former Foreign Office terrorism expert Richard Thompson until 2012.

The CNPA are appointed by the DECC Secretary of State and the organisation is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB).
