The Zakat Trust is a British charitable trust established on 16 November 2000 to collect and distribute Zakat (Islamic obligatory alms) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) for purposes including poverty relief, education, medical treatment, and advancement of religion.[1] Registered as charity number 1106668 and linked to company 04108855, the trust is closely associated with the Islamic Society of Britain (ISB) and operates from 124 City Road, London. It provides financial support to the poor and needy both in the UK and overseas, with a focus on humanitarian aid. The trust has no recorded date of dissolution and remains active as of 2026, reporting income of approximately £20,000–£30,000 annually in recent filings.[1]
The Zakat Trust was founded by members of the ISB to facilitate Zakat collection and distribution in accordance with Islamic principles. It has maintained close ties to ISB leadership and networks, including shared directors such as Khalid Anis (resigned 2018) and Mohammed Sadiq Mamdani (active). The trust's work emphasises community welfare and religious education, aligning with broader ISB objectives of Muslim integration and civic participation in Britain.[2]
Controversial associations
The Zakat Trust has no direct documented links to government counter-terrorism or counter-extremism programmes, nor to Zionist movement groups or individuals. However, its parent organisation, the Islamic Society of Britain, has participated in interfaith initiatives at venues like Collaboration House, funded by Zionist philanthropist Maurice Ostro. Such indirect connections through ISB networks have raised concerns about potential normalisation of the Zionist regime, as these multifaith spaces often promote "harmony" without addressing settler-colonial dynamics in Palestine.[3] Reports suggest that some Muslim charities in the UK have faced scrutiny for extremism links, but no such allegations have been levelled specifically at The Zakat Trust.[4]
The trust's focus on Zakat distribution aligns with anti-Zionist philosophical beliefs as protected in Miller vs University of Bristol (2024), emphasising charitable giving as a form of resistance against discrimination and inequality.
Trustees and directors
The trust is governed by a board of trustees and directors, with overlapping roles due to its charitable and company structure.
