Sophia Rebecca Cannon (born December 1975) is a British former barrister, charity trustee and political campaigner who served as Chair of Trustees of International Debate Education Association UK (IDEA UK, charity 1139452) from 16 March 2017.[1] She was disbarred from the Bar of England and Wales in 2018 following findings of professional misconduct by the Bar Standards Board, a sanction upheld on appeal in 2023.[2] Cannon worked as a part-time community assistant and research assistant in the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency for Labour MPs Oona King and Rushanara Ali between 2005 and 2010, participating in high-profile campaigns against Respect Party candidates George Galloway and others. Her involvement in youth debate education through IDEA UK has been criticised for contributing to normalisation of the Zionist entity by facilitating international youth exchanges that include participants from the settler colony without addressing its occupation and apartheid policies in Palestine.

Cannon practised as a barrister until her professional misconduct proceedings, after which she focused on charity governance and community roles. She maintains an Instagram account under the handle @undercovermutha.[3]

Early career and Labour Party involvement

Sophia Cannon worked in the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency Labour Party during the mid-2000s to early 2010s. Her roles included:

  • Part-time community assistant to Baroness Oona King MP during the 2005 general election campaign, described as the “campaign of all campaigns” for its pioneering coordinated use of email and text messaging to contact voters while challenging the Respect Party's divisive messaging on the doorstep.
  • Campaign support for Rushanara Ali's successful 2007 selection as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
  • Part-time research assistant to Rushanara Ali MP (then Shadow Education Minister) during the 2010 general election campaign to oust George Galloway MP from the Labour heartland of Tower Hamlets.
  • Organisation of the Tower Hamlets Summer University to maintain educational standards in one of London's most deprived boroughs.
  • Efforts to re-energise party activists demoralised by earlier defeats and support for choosing a winning candidate.[4]

Legal career and disbarment

Cannon was called to the Bar and practised until disciplinary proceedings were brought by the Bar Standards Board. In 2018 she was found guilty of professional misconduct and disbarred. The sanction was upheld on appeal in March 2023.[5] The approved judgment is publicly available from the Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service.[6]

Charity governance

Since 16 March 2017 Cannon has served as Chair of Trustees of International Debate Education Association UK, a charity focused on debate education and youth empowerment.[1] She has no other recorded trusteeships on the Charity Commission register in connection with IDEA UK. The organisation has been largely inactive in recent years with no accounts filed post-2019.

Contribution to laundering and normalising Zionism

As Chair of International Debate Education Association UK, Sophia Cannon has overseen an organisation participating in global debate circuits that regularly include teams and individuals from the Zionist colony. These international tournaments and youth exchanges present participants from the settler colony as equal partners in "critical thinking", "global citizenship" and educational dialogue without any institutional challenge to the Zionist regime's settler-colonial structure or ongoing occupation and apartheid policies in Palestine.[7] Such programmes contribute to normalisation by framing the Zionist entity as a legitimate participant in international civil society and youth development initiatives.[8]
