Ruth Thompson is the former director general of higher education at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
Since leaving government she has held many directorships and has worked as an independent consultant to various universities and higher education colleges.

Career
Thompson was the director general of higher education at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills between 2007 and 2009.[1]
In July 2009, after leaving the government, she notified ACOBA she planned on becoming an independent consultant to various universities and HE colleges. The role was "approved subject to the condition that, for 12 months from her last day of service, she should not be personally involved in lobbying BIS Ministers or Crown servants, including Special Advisers, on behalf of her clients."[2]
She was interim chief executive at Partnerships for Schools from 2011 to 2012 and a member of the audit committee at the Higher Education Funding Council for England between 2012 and 2013.[1]
She is currently deputy chair of the board of governors at Birbeck, University of London, governor and chair of education committee at Staffordshire University, non-executive director of Fusion Lifestyle and Moat Homes Limited, a commissioner of the Audit Commission, deputy chair of London TravelWatch, co-chair of the inquiry into financial sustainability of higher education at Higher Education Commission and a lay trustee at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.[1]
In November 2014, Thompson chaired a nine-month inquiry on behalf of the Higher Education Commission and published an 86 page report titled 'Too Good To Fail: The Financial Sustainability of Higher Education in England' with Lord Norton of Louth, professor of government in the department of politics and international studies at the University of Hull.[3]
