Paul Murphy was the Labour Party member of Parliament (MP) for Torfaen from 1987 to 2015. He served as Minister of State, Northern Ireland Office (Minister for Political Development) 1997-99; Secretary of State: for Wales 1999-2002, for Northern Ireland 2002-05; Chairman, Intelligence and Security Committee 2005-08; Secretary of State for Wales 2008-09.
Murphy announced in January 2015 he would not be contesting the 2015 general election as it 'would be better for a younger person to carry the Labour flag in our valley'. He was replaced by Nick Thomas-Symonds who held the seat.
