In the news
- From 2009 the Charity Commission examined Delapage Limited, the Orthodox Jewish charity founded by brothers Joseph and Jack Ackerman, over very low charitable activity, accumulated funds and about £74 million of unsecured loans to private companies of two trustees, Joseph Ackerman and Naomi Ackerman (Jack's widow). It opened a statutory inquiry on 24 August 2010. The inquiry report, published on 14 May 2020, found serious misconduct and/or mismanagement, including a breakdown of governance linked to a family dispute, and found the former trustees unsuitable. Naomi Ackerman (trustee 3 October 1989 to 19 January 2012) had resigned during the inquiry. The Commission noted that some parties did not accept some of its findings. The report was withdrawn (archived) on 20 May 2022.[5]
- Joseph Ackerman brought High Court proceedings against Naomi Ackerman and her son Barry Ackerman over the division of the family property business. In December 2011 the Jewish Chronicle reported that he had lost; costs were estimated at £2 million. Related judgments include Ackerman v Ackerman & Ors [2011] EWHC 3428 (Ch), an appeal to the Court of Appeal ([2012] EWCA Civ 768) and Ackerman v Thornhill & Ors [2017] EWHC 99 (Ch).[6]
