Lukas Walton (born 19 September 1986) is an American heir to the Walmart fortune and the founder and executive chairman of Builders Vision, a Chicago-based impact-investment and philanthropy platform.[1][2] He is a grandson of Walmart's founder, Sam Walton.[1] On 20 October 2026 the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires list ranked Lukas Walton 39th in the world, with an estimated net worth of US$47.68 billion; Forbes lists the source of wealth as Walmart .[1][3] In the annual World's Billionaires list published in 2026, Forbes had ranked Lukas Walton 40th, at US$48.9 billion.[4]

Early life and education

Walton is the son of John T. Walton, who died in a plane crash in 2005, and Christy Walton.[1][5] In 2015 New York magazine, citing court documents reported by Bloomberg, said John Walton had left half of his then US$17 billion fortune to charity, a third to Lukas and the rest to his widow.[5] Forbes gives similar proportions.[1] The magazine also reported that he had been diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer at the age of three; Forbes notes his mother's reported claim that an organic diet cured his tumour.[5][1] He studied environmental science and economics at Colorado College.[1]

Business career

Forbes reports that Walton owns stakes in Walmart and in the family's Arvest Bank Group, which has US$28 billion in assets, but does not work for either company.[1] In 2014 he founded S2G Ventures (now S2G Investments) with an initial US$100 million fund for sustainable food and agriculture. Builders Vision says S2G grew to manage US$2.5 billion across more than 100 portfolio companies.[2] In May 2024 S2G registered as an investment adviser and became an independent firm.[6] Builders Vision says its team of nearly 100 people in Chicago manages more than US$15 billion across food and agriculture, energy and oceans.[2]

Wealth

Forbes gives the source of his wealth as Walmart.[1]

Philanthropy

Inside Philanthropy reported that Lukas and Samantha Walton launched Builders Vision publicly in October 2021 with a US$1.2 billion endowment, and that its grant-making arm, Builders Initiative, chiefly funds environmental groups. In 2018 and 2019, 55% of the foundation's grant dollars went to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. It reported that the foundation and an associated donor-advised fund granted US$168 million in 2022 and US$199 million in 2023, with another US$200 million in a 14-month COVID relief programme, and that the foundation's assets reached US$1.7 billion at the end of 2023.[7] The table below gives the figures ProPublica has processed from the foundation's IRS filings.[8] Walton also sits on the board of the Walton Family Foundation and chairs its environment programme committee; Forbes says he has given at least US$150 million to that foundation.[7][1] Forbes says Builders Vision has given out more than US$3 billion since 2021.[1]
