Hertsmere Jewish Primary School (HJPS) is a mixed Jewish primary school for pupils aged 3 to 11 in Radlett, Hertfordshire. Since 1 October 2019 it has been a sponsor-led academy in the Jewish Community Academy Trust (JCAT). The Department for Education records a Jewish religious character, a capacity of 455 and 422 pupils on roll. Its headteacher is Rita Alak-Levi.[1] The school says it was Hertfordshire's first state Jewish primary school, and that the then Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, called it a "magnificent achievement".[2] The school was previously a voluntary aided school (URN 131955), open from 1 September 1999 until it became an academy on 30 September 2019.[3] Before that it was an independent school (URN 131651), which closed on 22 September 1999.[4]

Israel

The school's Jewish Studies aims include "A commitment to and love of the Land and the State of Israel".[11] Its festivals page says that on Yom Ha'atzmaut "Children come dressed in blue and white and have activities throughout the day including singing Hatikvah, army fun, biscuit decorating and an Israeli style lunch". It also lists candle-lighting assemblies for Years 3 to 6 on Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazikaron, and activities for Lag B'Omer and Yom Yerushalayim.[12] Yom Yerushalayim marks Israel's capture of East Jerusalem in 1967; the United Nations and the European Union regard East Jerusalem as occupied territory. The school choir has sung at the Boys' Town Jerusalem concerts and at 10 Downing Street at Chanukah.[13]

Beit Halochem UK

Beit Halochem UK, a British charity that raises money for the Beit Halochem rehabilitation centres for disabled Israeli soldiers and victims of attacks in Israel,[14] lists the school (as "Hartsmere Jewish Primary School") among the schools that took part in a non-uniform day in its aid. The charity's "For Schools" page, as archived in February 2025, thanked the schools listed "for showing solidarity with our soldiers".[15] The page also invites schools to host a veteran who will speak to pupils about "courage and resilience" and "the sacrifices made by our soldiers". By November 2026 the wording had become "our veterans", and the page said such visits had been "particularly meaningful" around Yom Ha'atzmaut and Yom Hazikaron.[16] In November 2026 the school's logo was among those displayed on the charity's schools page.[16]

The chair of Beit Halochem UK is Andrew Wolfson, who according to the charity has been a trustee since April 2016 and chairman since May 2018. The same page says he is also a trustee of The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust.[17]
