Greg Masel

Occupation Fundraising executive
Known for Director general of Keren Hayesod (from 2004)

Greg Masel is a Zionist fundraising executive who became director general of Keren Hayesod–United Israel Appeal in 2004, having previously run its Sydney operation.[1] In 2016 he took part, for the United Israel Appeal, in a consultation run by Benny Gantz on a proposed initiative to be funded by donors and the government. That consultation is known from leaked emails.[2]

Career

According to Itón Gadol, Masel was the youngest person ever to become director general of Keren Hayesod, with responsibility for its fundraising campaigns in 54 countries. From 1994 to 1999 he held executive posts at Keren Hayesod, including director of its major donors division. From 1999 to 2003 he was executive director of the UIA in New South Wales (Sydney), where, the report said, the campaign grew from US$7.5 million to more than US$14 million. In the year before his appointment he headed Keren Hayesod's English-speaking countries department, covering Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and South Africa.[3] The JTA reported that he replaced Gad Ben-Ari, a former spokesman for Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.[1]

2016 "12 Tribes" consultation

Emails from Benny Gantz's account were released by the hacking group Handala, which is believed to have ties to Iranian intelligence, and published by Distributed Denial of Secrets. The material has not been independently verified and may have been altered. According to these emails, Masel (listed as "UIA") was invited to a "12 Tribes" consultation on 20 April 2016. The other invitees included Sima Vaknin-Gil of the Ministry of Strategic Affairs and Public Diplomacy, Amos Yadlin and Assaf Orion of the Institute for National Security Studies. Gantz's summary described the aim as "a non-hierarchical mother ship, working for the people and the state but not for the government". It records Masel as saying (translated from Hebrew) that "many donors want a tax credit or deduction" and asking "what justifies $20–50m, assuming government matching".[2]
