George C Borthwick

George Borthwick is Chairman of Nova Science Limited - a company engaged in Medical Research and the development of medical products - and is also Chairman of Tayside Flow Technologies Limited. Borthwick is Chairman of Scottish Business in the Community, a visiting Professor at Napier University and is Vice Chairman of the Court of Napier University. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and is also a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute [1].

George Borthwick was with Ethicon, a manufacturer of Wound Closure Products for the Medical Profession and a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson (USA) for 33 years and was appointed President of Ethicon Europe in 1996. George retired from his position with Ethicon at the end of March 2002.

He has been honoured with Honorary Doctorates from Queen Margaret University College and Napier University and Honorary Fellowships of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, The East African Association of Surgeons and is an Honorary Member of the James IV Association of Surgeons. He serves on the Court of Patrons of The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a Member of the Worshipfull Company of Needlemakers and a Freeman of the City of London. He was born in Glasgow and attended the University of Strathclyde graduating with a BSc Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering [2].
