Gateshead Jewish Boarding School is an independent Orthodox Jewish school for boys aged 10 to 16 at 10 Rydal Street, Gateshead. The Department for Education records that it opened on 31 December 1957, with 152 pupils on roll against a capacity of 147. It lists Rabbi N Wolinsky as headteacher and the board of governors as proprietor.[1] Despite its name, Ofsted describes it as "a day school for boys of Orthodox Jewish faith".[2]

Israel

An Ofsted light touch inspection in December 2009 reported: "Pupils take part in fundraising activities for the school and needy families in Israel."[3]

Inspections

In September 2025 Ofsted reported that pupils study Kodesh (Jewish studies) in the morning and the secular curriculum in the afternoon. It said they "study GCSE qualifications in Year 9 and Year 10" and leave at the end of Year 10, most of them for a yeshiva. It named David Schleider as chair and Rabbi Naftoli Wolinsky as headteacher. Ofsted judged the school to require improvement and found that it did not meet all the independent school standards. Inspectors reported: "Leaders requested that inspectors did not ask pupils any questions relating to the protected characteristics of sexual orientation or gender reassignment."[2]

At a progress monitoring inspection in July 2026, Ofsted found that "the school still does not teach pupils about the protected characteristics of sexual orientation and gender reassignment". It said the school's action plan "was found by the Department for Education to be unsuitable".[4]

The school was judged inadequate in July 2016 and has been judged to require improvement at every standard inspection since: in 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2025.[5][6][7][8][2]
