Albert Jongman
According to a biographical note:
- majored in sociology at the University of Groningen in 1981. From 1982 to 1987 he has been attached to the Polemological Institute of the University of Groningen where he worked on a data project on armed conflict. His cooperation with Alex P. Schmid resulted in the reference work: Political Terrorism. A new guide to actors, authors, concepts, data bases, theories, and literature (1988). Since then Jongman worked as data manager and one of the main researchers of the PIOOM Foundation of which he currently is the interim coordinator. This foundation is an interdisciplinary research organization analyzing the root causes of gross violations of human rights, which is located at the Political Science Department, Leiden University. In 1996 he edited Contemporary Genocides: Causes, Cases, Consequences. His monitoring and data collection efforts in the fields of armed conflict and human rights violations have resulted in the annually-updated PIOOM World Conflict and Human Rights Map which have appeared since 1997. The monitoring is part of several research projects funded by the Dutch Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs and the European Centre for Conflict Prevention, Utrecht University. Reseach findings have appeared in the journal 'Terrorism and Political Violence' and the annual 'Dutch Yearbook on Peace and Security.'[1]
