Unite House, 128 Theobalds Road, London

Unite the Union is a British trade union. It was formed in 2007 through the merger of Amicus and the Transport and General Workers' Union.

It is one of the main donors to the Labour Party.

History

Amicus

In 2001, the Manufacturing, Science and Finance (MSF) union and the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) merged to form Amicus. Ken Jackson (AEEU) and Roger Lyons (MSF) were originally joint general secretaries of the union, in 2003 Derek Simpson replaced Jackson and soon after Lyons also left.

In 2004 the Union for the Finance Industry and Graphical, Paper and Media Union also merged with Amicus.[1]

Transport and General Workers' Union

The T&G was founded in 1922, but can be seen in the earliest days of trade unionism in Britain.

In May 2007 the T&G and Amicus merged to form Unite the Union.[1]

At the 2016 union conference, Unite re-affirmed its opposition to the fracking industry, while also committing to ensure 'robust health and safety procedures are in place for industry workers and ensuring that minimum standards for pay, terms and conditions are in place as well'. [2]

In November 2016 Unite sponsored a national demonstration against fracking held in Manchester, attended by over 2,000 campaigners. [3]

People

  • Len McCluskey, general secretary. Originally elected in 2010, won re-election for five more years in 2013.[4]

Meetings with Miliband

Between 25 September 2010 and 31 December 2013, McCluskey met with with Labour leader Ed Miliband 13 times. These meeting occasionally also involved Dave Prentis and Paul Kenny of Unison and GMB.[5]

Dwindling support for the Labour Party

In April 2014 McCluskey raised the possibility that Unite might stop donations to the Labour Party if it fails to win the 2015 General Election. He believes the party will lose if it campaigns 'on what he called "a pale shade of austerity", rather than the more robust left-wing political programme that he and his union allies want'.

If this happens, it is believed Unite would fund a rival party - the Workers’ Party. McCluskey also implied this party would 'join the Liberal Democrats and others in campaigning for MPs to be elected under a system of proportional representation to give the new party a better chance of gaining a toehold in Parliament'.[6]
