Paul Double is Remembrancer of the City of London.
A former barrister, Double took up the role in 2003. Officially his work is described as 'looking after the City of London Corporation’s interests in Parliament'.
Journalist and author Nicholas Shaxson has dubbed the role of the Remembrancer the 'world's oldest institutional lobbyist' - it dates back to the times of Henry VIII.
Campaigners and politicians have called for this archaic role to be abolished, arguing that Double is the only non-MP or civil servant with a seat in the House of Lords and House of Commons. He sits to the right of the Speaker of the House.
