Castells has been an adviser to numerous international bodies including the International Labour Office, US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of Brazil, whose ex-president (IMF and USA-loving and exponent of the false promises of neo-liberal political/business/financial policies) Fernando Cardoso remains a friend. Citing both Alain Touraine and Daniel Bell, Castells’ key interest for most of his career has been with social movements and “post-industrial society,” or the “network society” and the power of identity and social movements.

Castells' partner is Emma Kiselyova a Senior Fellow at the USC Center on Public Diplomacy (PD).
