Charles Peña

Charles V. Peña is an analyst for MSNBC, and an expert on terrorism, missile defense, and other 'national security' issues. Amongst other roles he is currently a Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute. Peña is a right wing critic of the Bush adminstration's foreign policy, and has argued that the Iraqi occupation in particular is an obstacle to an effective counter terrorism policy. Pena is on the Advisory council of the Democracy Institute.[1]

Education

Peña received his M.A. in Security Policy Studies from the George Washington University and B.A. in Political Science from Claremont Men's College.[3]

Career

Peña is currently a Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute, the Coalition for a Realistic Foreign Policy, and the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute. He is also and an adviser on the Straus Military Reform Project.[4] Peña was previously the Director of Defense Policy Studies at the Cato Institute where he managed programs and studies on missile defence and other long range military weaponry, as well as Navy force structure and costing, joint military exercises, and emergency preparedness and response.[5] In 2008 Peña was appointed Foreign Policy Advisor Republican Presidential hopeful Ron Paul.[6] Peña is currently an analyst for MSNBC television and was an analyst for Global TV (Canada) and Channel One News (a PRIMEDIA Inc. company) during the Iraq war.[7] He is also a regular commentator on national security issues in the print media.
