A graduate of the University of Glasgow with a 1st Class Honours in Mathematics, Benny Higgins went to Standard Life where he spent three years studying to be an actuary. In 1986 he was appointed Investment Manager, pooled & segregation pension funds and in 1990 was seconded to Montreal. In 1993 Benny was appointed assistant General Manager, Customer Service and in 1995 became Deputy General Manager, then General Manager Sales. Between 1997 and 2005 he was Chief Executive, Retail Banking at Royal Bank of Scotland where he was responsible for personal, affluent and SME businesses across both NatWest and RBS. He led the successful integration of NatWest Retail Banking within RBS, the largest single merger in UK banking for some time.

In May 2006, he joined HBOS plc as Chief Executive Officer of the Retail Division [1].
