Bill McCarthy (Nuclear scientist)

Bill McCarthy works on nuclear safety issues at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

Background

Bill McCarthy graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1983 with a first class honours degree in Chemistry. From September 1983 to August 1994, he worked at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Aldermaston, where his duties included the analysis of radionuclides in a variety of environmental media and radiation detection studies.

Currently in the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), he has worked in the field of nuclear safeguards since August 1994. He has undertaken a wide variety of duties relevant to the international safeguards regimes of the European Commission (Euratom safeguards) and the IAEA, including oversight of international safeguards implementation at UK nuclear facilities.
