Dan Plesch

Daniel Tibor Plesch (born 15 February 1955) is an academic and media pundit specialising in arms control and international security. He is currently the Director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) at the London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

Biography

Plesch was born at Keele in Staffordshire and grew up in London. He studied a BA in History at Nottingham and obtained professional qualifications in social work and public administration from Bristol in 1979 and 1980.[1] He says in the early 1980s he was active in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and helped organise the Glastonbury festivals.[2]

In 1987 Plesch founded the British American Security Information Council (BASIC), a research and advocacy group specialising in security and arms control with a transatlantic focus. Plesch directed BASIC from Washington DC until 2001 when he was appointed Senior Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute. In 2003 he became an Honorary Fellow of Birkbeck College, University of London and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the University of Keele.[3] Plesch is known to have worked as a consultant to Kroll Security International.[4] He holds a Masters and a PhD in International Law – the latter from Keele University – although it is not clear when he undertook these courses.[5]

The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce describes Plesch as “one of Britain’s leading public intellectuals”.[6] He has written for a wide variety of print media including the Times, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, New York Times and the Washington Times[7] and has regularly provided live political and military analysis of evolving news stories for the BBC, CNN, ITN and other news media.[8]
