Labour and Trade Union Press Service
NATO-subsidised bulletin for British trade union newspapers, issued by the Labour Committee for Transatlantic Understanding
The Labour and Trade Union Press Service (LTUPS) was a duplicated bulletin issued to trade union newspapers by the Labour Committee for Transatlantic Understanding (LCTU). It was started by the former US labour attaché in London, Joseph Godson, and chaired by Alan Lee Williams.[1]
Funding
In 1981 The Leveller reported that the press service was "100 percent subsidised by NATO" and had been started by Joseph Godson.[2] Tribune reported in July 1980 that it was the press service that took the NATO money.[3] The Guardian reported in 1985 that the British government had said in 1980 that NATO had given £32,000 over the previous four years to the LCTU.[4]
Contributors
Tribune reported that in August 1979 the bulletin carried an attack on the left of the Labour Party by Terry Duffy of the engineers' union, and that other contributors had included Harold Wilson, writing on the need to fight back against the Labour Party's National Executive Committee, and Denis Healey, writing on pay and productivity.[3]
