Lubavitch Girls Primary School is a state-funded Orthodox Jewish academy for girls aged 4 to 11 at 107–115 Stamford Hill, in the London Borough of Hackney. It is part of the Lubavitch Multi Academy Trust. The Department for Education records that it opened as an academy on 1 April 2018, with 101 pupils on roll against a capacity of 195, and Mrs Vivian Funtong as headteacher.[1] It is one of the Chabad Lubavitch schools in the UK.

History

The academy replaced the voluntary aided Lubavitch Ruth Lunzer Girls Primary School (URN 134639). That school opened on 1 April 2004 and closed on 31 March 2018 when it converted. The register lists the independent Lubavitch House School (Junior Girls) (URN 133618) as its predecessor.[2] Ofsted judged the voluntary aided school satisfactory in 2006 and 2009 and good in 2013, and found in June 2017 that it continued to be good.[3][4][5][6]

Admissions ruling

In November 2021 The Jewish Chronicle reported that the Office of the Schools Adjudicator had partially upheld a complaint by the National Secular Society about the school's admission arrangements. It said the school's application form listed the only options for ethnic background as "Ethnic background: White-Orthodox Jewish/ White-British/ White-European/ White-Other". The adjudicator also found that the phrase "according to halochah", used for giving priority, was not clear enough, and that the arrangements "will need to be revised to rectify this fault". According to the paper, the adjudicator did not uphold the society's objection that the reference to halachah breached equality law. A spokesman for the trust said the school was "eager to ensure that our arrangements will be fully compliant with the new code".[7]

Inspections

Pikuach inspected the school's Jewish education on 29 and 30 June 2022 and judged it good overall (grade 2). It recorded 132 pupils and named Hadasa Korer as chair and Judith Nemeth as headteacher.[8] Earlier Pikuach reports are dated 2006, 2009 and 2013.[9][10][11]

At an ungraded inspection in September 2022, Ofsted found no change to the good judgement but recommended that the next inspection be graded.[12] In December 2023 it judged the school good, with early years provision requiring improvement. It named Hadasah Korer as chair of the trust and Judith Nemeth as executive headteacher.[13]
