Glasgow Rabbinical College and Mikveh is a small Scottish charity that makes Jewish education grants and runs the Glasgow Mikveh (ritual bath) in the Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue building. It was registered on 26 January 1942 as the Glasgow Rabbinical College & Yeshivah and took its present name on 26 October 2017.[1][2] In 2025 it received £29,984 in appeals and donations and paid £31,005 in grants.[2] The only funder named in published accounts is the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust, which gave it £22,000 in 2025. The chair, Malcolm Livingstone, is also a trustee of that trust.[3][4]

Registration and objects

The OSCR register describes the charity as an unincorporated association with a constitutional form date of 26 January 1942. Its main operating location is East Renfrewshire, and it has no staff or volunteers. Its object is "to promote Jewish Education at all levels and by all proper methods and to engage in such activities as will lead to the accomplishment of this end in Glasgow and the surrounding area". It describes its work as: "Provides educational study grants. Provide a Mikveh (ritual bath house) for the Community use".[1] The register notes the previous name, "Glasgow Rabbinical College & Yeshivah from 26/01/1942 to 26/10/2017".[1]

The registered address is "Penthouse, Woodend, Whitecraigs, Glasgow, G46 7JN", which OSCR records as a charity trustee's address.[1] The 2025 accounts give the charity's address as Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue, 222 Fenwick Road, Giffnock, Glasgow G46 6UE. They list its bankers as Clydesdale Bank, St Vincent Place, Glasgow, and its solicitors as Mitchells Roberton, 36 Hanover Street, Glasgow.[2]

Activities

The 2025 trustees' report gives the objects as promoting Jewish education "including Education Grants" and managing "the Glasgow Mikveh (Ritual bath house) situated in the premises of the Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue". It says that "an increase in donations enabled the Trustees to increase the level of educational grants in 2025". The mikveh was refurbished in 2023, and its running costs in 2025 "were again at a low level".[2] The accounts do not name grant recipients.

In 2012 the charity transferred £150,000 to the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust, which "absorbed [it] into the Education Fund" to be applied in line with that fund's objects.[3]
