American alternative investment management company


Blackstone Inc. is an American alternative investment management company based in New York City. It is the world's largest alternative asset manager with more than $1.3 trillion in assets under management as of March 2026.[1]

It was founded in 1985 as a mergers and acquisitions advisory firm by Peter G. Peterson and Stephen A. Schwarzman.[2]

Blackstone specialises in private equity, real estate, credit, infrastructure, hedge funds, secondaries, growth equity, and insurance solutions. It went public in 2007 and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BX.

History

Blackstone was founded in 1985 by Peter G. Peterson and Stephen A. Schwarzman, who had previously worked together at Lehman Brothers.[1]

The firm began as a mergers and acquisitions advisory business before expanding into private equity and other alternative investments. It has grown to become the largest player in leveraged buyouts and global real estate acquisitions.

Operations

Blackstone manages investments across multiple asset classes for institutional and individual investors. Key areas include private equity, real estate (with approximately 12,500 assets), and credit strategies.[1]

As of Q1 2026, total assets under management reached $1.304 trillion, with fee-earning AUM at $937.6 billion.[3]
