American businessman, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Blackstone Inc.


Stephen Allen Schwarzman (born February 14, 1947) is an American businessman. He is the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Blackstone Inc., one of the world's largest alternative investment firms with over $1.3 trillion in assets under management.[1]

He co-founded the firm in 1985 with Peter G. Peterson.[2]

Schwarzman has built Blackstone into a global leader in private equity, real estate, credit, and infrastructure.

Early life and education

Schwarzman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in nearby Huntingdon Valley. His father owned a dry-goods store.[3]

He graduated from Yale University, where he was a member of Skull and Bones, and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.[4]

Career

Schwarzman worked at Lehman Brothers before co-founding Blackstone Inc. in 1985 with $400,000 of their own capital.[2]

The firm started as a mergers and acquisitions advisory business and grew into the world's largest alternative asset manager.[5]

As of 2026, Blackstone manages $1.3 trillion in assets.[1]
