Michael Leffell
Michael Leffell is co-director of the Lisa and Michael Leffell Foundation (EIN: 31-6633021) a grantmaking foundation which supports numerous Jewish and pro-Israel causes. The foundation is a major donor to Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, the US body that sends funds to the Israeli Association for the Wellbeing of Israel's Soldiers. Between 2002-2013 the foundation donated $910,830 to the FIDF.[1]
In 2010 Leffell founded Portage Advisors, LCC. The company website describes the organisation as a 'specialized research firm... that focuses on alternative asset managers, real estate, and niche investment opportunities.' [2]
In 2018 he was listed on the board of directors of the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA). [3].
Biography
The company's website in 2015 gave the following information on Leffell:
- 'Prior to founding Portage in 2010, Mr. Leffell was the Deputy Executive Managing Member of Davidson Kempner Capital Management, a $22 billion event-driven, multi-strategy hedge fund. While at the firm, Mr. Leffell also managed the Distressed Securities investment strategy for 20 years. Under his guidance, the firm successfully navigated through volatile markets and grew from $20 million under management and 6 employees, to $12 billion under management with over 150 employees in New York and London. Mr. Leffell's key contributions include strengthening the firm's investment research and management practices as well as expanding its strategies, investment discipline, employee empowerment, autonomy, and accountability.
- Prior to joining Davidson Kempner Capital Management, Mr. Leffell was a Litigation Associate at the New York law firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler.
- Mr. Leffell received a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1984, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and earned a B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Clark University in 1981. Mr. Leffell lives in Westchester, New York with his wife Lisa and their four children: Benjamin, Adam, Lauren, and Ari.'[2]
Together with his wife and co-director of the foundation, Lisa Leffell, he was a committee member for the AIPAC Northeast Gala 2014. Leffell and his wife donated more than $100,000 at the event. The couple are members of AIPAC's national council.[2]
