Sholto Byrnes is a former British journalist, now a senior fellow at the Malaysian government-funded Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) think tank, and a weekly columnist for The National in Abu Dhabi.

Background
Byrnes has worked as a journalist for over 20 years, including on the Independent, as a senior editor at the New Statesman and as editor of Qatar Foundation's quarterly international magazine.
In 2014 he took up a position as a senior fellow at Malaysia's Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS).
Byrnes has a BA and MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford University, and has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts since 2009. [1]
Affiliations
According to the Sarawak Report, Byrne has worked with UK lobbyist Paul Stadlen who runs the communications team of the Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak. Byrne denies any such links. [2]
