All-Party Parliamentary Group on Water Safety and Drowning Prevention
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Water Safety and Drowning Prevention was formed in 2014, with the aim:
- 'To raise awareness of the issue of death by drowning in the UK and to provide a forum for discussion on water safety related issues.'[1]

Background
The Royal Life Saving Society UK was integral to establishing the all party group, providing the secretariat to the group and informing MPs who are concerned with preventing death by drowning and keeping people by the water safe. In 2014, 381 died from drowning and many more from related injuries. The group will aim to teach people personal survival, basic water rescue skills and safety education.
The group's chairperson, Nadhim Zahawi said the following of the groups inaugural meeting:
- 'It’s great to see so many Parliamentarians engaging with this subject. The basic safety and rescue skills taught by the RLSS UK can make the difference between life and death so it’s vital that we keep drowning prevention high up on Westminster’s agenda.' [2]
The chief executive of the Royal Life Saving Society, Di Steer, welcomed the move to establish a parliamentary group on the issue:
- 'This is an important step forward for RLSS UK in getting MPs’ support in helping to stop the unnecessary loss of life to drowning. One person drowns every 20 hours in the UK and together with the All Parliamentary Group we will continue our working in reducing the number of people who drown each year. We would like to thanks each and every MP who is part of the group and aware of the lifesaving importance of water safety education.'[2]
