David Hamilton
David Hamilton is the Labour MP for Midlothian. [1] Hamilton has served in this constituency since 2001, and in 2010 he was elected for a third term with a majority of 10,349. [2]
He also currently serves as the Scottish Labour whip in the House of Commons. [3]
Hamilton announced he will be stepping down from his parliamentary role in May 2015. [3]
Background
Hamilton has a mining and trade union background. He worked as a miner from 1966 to 1985 in various collieries and was union delegate at Monktonhall Colliery between 1976 and 1986. During the miners' strike in 1984-1985 Hamilton led six of the strike centres in the Mid and East Lothian area. [2]
Before becoming an MP, Hamilton was also a councillor in Midlothian for six years. [3]
Since joining parliament Hamilton has been part of four select committees: the work and pensions select committee, the Scottish affairs select committee, the procedures select committee and he still sits on the defence select committee. [2]
Hamilton also served as parliamentary private secretary to Ed Miliband when he was shadow secretary of state at the Department of Energy and Climate Change in 2010. [2]
