April
- April undated - In April 1984, the Irish Joint Section was wound up. The Security Service became solely responsible for its Belfast station and created a new section, F8, in London which assumed management responsibility.[6] The F8 Section was a part of the FX Branch of the Service in London, which became responsible for dealing with counter-terrorism.[1]
May
- 8 - Brian Nelson has his first meeting with an FRU handler. A contact form (CF) describes his motivation for informing against the UDA in the following terms: "… in the early days, the UDA was a necessary organisation but it had grown evil and was behind more of the criminal activities in Protestant areas."[2]
November
- 16 - Loyalist Michael Stone killed Catholic milkman and Sinn Féin member Patrick Brady, after reading a military intelligence report passed on by Brian Nelson.[3]
December
- Shooting of Daniel Doherty and William Fleming by the SAS.[4]
