Herzl Zionist Institute, Glasgow

The Herzl Zionist Institute, Glasgow was created in Glasgow in around 1905. It was one of a number of Herzl Zionist Institutes.

1906

• 1906 - January - Glasgow: A concert in aid of the Herzl Zionist Institute was given on Sunday in the Wellington Palace! A large number of theatrical and other artists gave their services.
• 1906 - March - The second annual Purim concert of the Beth Herzl Zionist Institute, in aid of the funds, was held on Sunday, at the Institute. A sketch entitled " Grubstein versus Sugarman " was played. The principal parts were in the hands of S. Benson, P. Sherman, S. Marcuson, I. Benson, J. Sachs, S. Benson and H. Raigoff. Messrs. M Jacobs, P. Sopher, P. Woolfson and Master L. Freedman sang. Mr. D. August was accompanist. The arrangements for the concert were carried out by Mr P. Sherman. A large portrait of Dr. Herzl was presented to the Institute bv Mr. P. Sherman, on behalf of Mr. S. Lever. Portraits of Dr. Nordau and Herr David Wolffsohn were presented by Messrs. P. Sherman and B. Shenkin respectively.
• 1906 - March - Glasgow: On Sunday, under the auspices of the Glasgow B'nei Zion, a discussion on "How to Strengthen Zionism" was held in the Herzl Zionist Institute. Mr. I. Lazarus, President, was in the Chair. Mr. P. Sherman opened the discussion. The other speakers were: Messrs. P. Woolfson. B. Gras, Klebansky. Feingold, Halpern, H. Golombok, and two Russian transmigfants, Messrs. Lipshitz and Wexler.
• 1906 - November - Glasgow: — Mr. Isidore Bernstein has presented the Herzl Zionist Institute with volumes of the Jewish Chronicle from 1900 to 1904.
• 1906 - November - A largely attended public meeting was held on Sunday in the Herzl Zionist Institute, under the auspices of the Glasgow B'nei Zion. Mr. L Lazarus presided. Mr. Joseph Cowen, of London, was the principal speaker. The following resolution was moved by Mr. Cowen, seconded by Mr. H. Gollombok, and unanimously carried:—"That this meeting of Glasgow Zionists records its unalterable conviction that only in the acquisition of a legally secured, publicly recognised home in Palestine, can the Jewish question be satisfactorily settled, and pledges itself loyally to support the Zionist movement and Its leaders." Mr. Cowen urged the necessity of standing firm to the Basle programme. He said that he knew from members of the Smaller Actions Committee that the possibilities of success were as favourable now as they were in Herzl's time. Speaking of Territorialism, Mr. Cowen denied the right of the Ito to lay down for the Jews what land they should occupy, and he wanted to see the conference that would come together and choose any other land but Palestine. It would not be by mere emigration that the Jewish question would be solved, but by raising the dignity and independence of the Jew, and by making Israel a nation once again. A vote of thanks to Mr. Cowen was proposed by Mr. I. Bernstein, and seconded by the Rev. Mr. Mepoz. On the platform were many representatives of local Jewish associations.
• 1906 - November - GLASGOW: An urgent want has been met by the establishment in this city of a "Jewish Central Charitable Board." It comprises representatives of the Jewish Board of Guardians, Talmud Torah, Strangers Aid Society, and Jewish Hospital Fund and Sick Visiting Association, and intends to deal mainly with the charitable collections made at marriages, and other family celebrations.—The following constitute the Board: Messrs. J. Fox, Chairman; A. August, Hon. Treasurer; A. H. Links, Hon. Secretary; and O. Jacobs, P. Levy, J. Posner, D. Rosenbloom, B. Lazarus, M. Miller, B. Louis, J. Goldstone, B. Glasser and the Rev. I. Levine. Mr. B. Benson has been elected Collector. The Presidents and Treasurers of the various congregations In Glasgow will be ex-officio members of the Board.—Last Sunday, at the Herzl Zionist Institute, under the auspices of the Bnei Zion, Rabbi Mendelson lectured on "The General Position of Zionism." Mr. I. Lazarus presided, and Messrs. Golombok and H. Handelman spoke.

1909

• 1909 - February - The annual meeting of the Herzl Zionist Institute was held on Sunday. Mr. B. Shenkin presided. The Hon. Secretary, Mr. J. Sachs, submitted his report on the activity of the -Committee during the past year. The Treasurer, Mr. L. Haase, read the financial statement, which showed income £411, and expenditure £410. Thanks were accorded the Executive and Committee for their work during the past year, on the motion of Mr. S. Michaelson seconded by Mr. P. Sherman. The following were elected Messrs. B. Shenkin, President ; L. Haase, Vice-President; J. Harwitch and E Isaacs, joint Treasurers; J. Sachs, Hon. Secretary; and a Committee.

1910

• 1910 - August - GLASGOW - The Herzl Jahrzeit was commemorated on Sunday by the Glasgow B'nei Zion at the Herzl Zionist Institute. The meeting was addressed by the Rev. I. Raffalovich, of Liverpool, who implored all Zionists to sink their differences, and once for all to follow the road so heroically initiated by Herzl. The Rev. M. Katz occupied the Chair, and among the subsequent speakers were Messrs. E. Levene, B.A., B. Michaelson, Z. Golombok and P. Sherman.
• 1910 - November - 'The second Annual Confetti Dance of the Herzl Zionist Institute held last week was successful both socially and financially, thanks to the labours of the Dance Committee.
