HN35 is the cipher given to a former officer with the Special Demonstration Squad, serving as back office / management during the last two / three years of the units existence (circa 2005 - 2008), during which he was cover officer for about six undercovers. It has been ruled in the Undercover Policing Inquiry that their real name cannot be published.[1]

Other material

Joined Metropolitan Police in 1980s. Was recruited into the SDS by HN72, as a cover officer with rank of Detective Sergeant, serving in that rank and role for two years until 2008.[2] They did not use a cover name. They also said:[3]

I do not recall being provided with any specific assurance about confidentiality relating to my role as as a Cover Officer at the SOS but due to the nature of the groups that the [undercovers] were deployed into and their role as intelligence gatherers I did not foresee that my name would ever be made public in relation to this work.

In the Undercover Policing Inquiry

  • March 2018: Minded to note stated that HN35's real name cannot be published, but the Chair of the Inquiry, John Mitting, stated:[4]
His evidence about at least three of them will have to be given entirely in closed session. The family background of, and the police duties performed outside the Special Duties Squad by HN35 create risks to the safety and well-being of HN35 and of the wider family.
  • Jan 2018: more time granted 'to provide the Chairman with information in order for him to make a decision'.[5][6]
