Ruth Kelly
Ruth Kelly has been the Labour MP for Bolton West since 1997.[1]
Communities Secretary
Kelly served as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government from May 2006 to June 2007.[2]
Britain: Our Values, Our Responsibilities
In an October 2006 speech, Kelly called for "a fundamental rebalancing of our relationship with Muslim organisations from now on":
- Since taking up my post, I have actively sought to develop relationships with a wider network of Muslim organisations, including those representing young people and women.
- In future, I am clear that our strategy of funding and engagement must shift significantly towards those organisations that are taking a proactive leadership role in tackling extremism and defending our shared values. It is only by defending our values that we will prevent extremists radicalising future generations of terrorists[3]
The move was seen as a snub to the Muslim Council of Britain.[4]
HSBC
After standing down at the 2010 election, Kelly joined HSBC's strategy unit.[5] as Senior Manager Strategy, Global Businesses.
