Joan Hoey works of the Economist Intelligence Unit and used the pseudonym Joan Phillips when she wrote for the LM group.

She wrote a series of articles for LM Magazine throughout the 1990s questioning Serb nationalist atrocities. She was director of the London International Research Exchange [1] and works as the Economist Intelligence Unit's Balkans analyst. Her biography on the Economist website neglects to mention here role at LM:

Before joining the Economist Intelligence Unit in 1995, Joan worked as a freelance journalist and analyst covering Eastern Europe. [2]

It does, however, also state that:

She was a Senior Research Associate for the Russia, Eastern Europe and Balkans research programme at the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies at Lancaster University in 1994-95.[3]

This unit is close to the Ministry of Defence and the arms industry, an interesting post for a former revolutionary socialist.

Phillips is sister of former Labour minister Kate Hoey.
