United Israel Appeal
The United Israel Appeal is a US based subsidiary of the Jewish Federations of North America. It is the US affiliate of Keren Hayesod - United Israel Appeal one of the four Jerusalem based National Institutions, which form the backbone of the transnational Zionist movement.
It was established in 1925 as the United Palestine Appeal. It was renamed the United Israel Appeal in 1938. After the Reconstitution of the Jewish Agency for Israel in 1971, for the first time, American Jewish leaders, through UIA, played a role in determining the policies of the Jewish Agency for Israel through their representation in its new governing bodies. In this capacity, 'UIA has helped serve as the living bridge between the American Jewish community and the Jewish Agency. The Jewish Agency acts as UIA’s exclusive operating agent in Israel.'[1] In 1999, the United Jewish Communities was created to merge the United Israel Appeal, the United Jewish Appeal and the Council of Jewish Federations into a single, national organization. After this merger, UIA became a subsidiary of UJC, now renamed the Jewish Federations of North America.[1]
