John Newbigin is a former part-time special adviser to Labour's Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Chris Smith.[1]
Background
From 1986 to 1992, Newbigin was Policy Adviser to Neil Kinnock, then Leader of the Labour Party. In 1992, he became Executive of David Puttnam’s film company Enigma where he worked until 1997. From 1997 to 2000, Newbigin was special adviser to the former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Chris Smith. From January 2000 to 2005, Newbigin was Head of Corporate Relations at Channel 4.[2]
Newbigin is the Chairman of online cultural sector gateway Culture24 (previously the 24 Hour Museum) until 2010, a trustee of the Whitechapel Art Gallery and a board member of the National Lottery-funded organisation First Light, the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Keen Students School, the Cultural Industries Development Agency and the government agency Becta.[3] He is also an advisor to the John Smith Memorial Trust, created to commemorate former Labour leader John Smith's ideals.[4]
In 2009, he became Chair of Creative England, "a national agency that invests in and supports creative ideas, talent and businesses in film, TV, games and digital media". [5]
