Maher al-Assad is the head of the Syrian Republican Guard. He is the youngest son of the late president Hafez al-Assad and the brother of the current president Bashar Al-Assad. Maher is reported to have led the Fourth Armoured Division in repressing pro-democracy protests which began in the southern city of Deraa in March 2011.[1]
