Established in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO. The Codex Alimentarius Commission, is a body run by the World Health Organisation and the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organisation to determine the quality and safety of food. According to its website, 'the main purposes of this programme are protecting health of the consumers and ensuring fair trade practices in the food trade, and promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.'[1]
