Lord Powell of Bayswater KCMG was Private Secretary and adviser on foreign affairs and defence to Margaret Thatcher and for the first months of John Major's government. Since 1992 he has been an "international businessman", currently serving on the board of a number of major companies including Caterpillar and Textron in the US, LVMH in France, Schindler in Switzerland, Yell Group in the UK and Mandarin Oriental Hotels .
Powell is also a member of the Advisory Boards of Rolls-Royce, Hicks Muse, Magna Corporation, Barrick Gold, Thales, GEMS and Diligence. Among other roles, he is President of the China-Britain Business Council, Chairman of Atlantic Partnership, Chairman of the Trustees of the Oxford University Business School Foundation and is a Trustee of the British Museum and of the Aspen Institute in the USA.
He is a cross-bench member of the House of Lords, where he serves on the Economic Affairs Committee. He is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Entrepreneurship.
