Umbrella organisation representing French Jewish institutions
Le CRIF (Conseil Représentatif des Institutions Juives de France), also known as the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions, is the main umbrella organisation representing the interests of French Jews since 1944.
Founded in 1944 during the Nazi occupation as the Comité Général de Défense Juive by Jewish resistance groups including communists, Zionists and Bundists, it evolved into the central voice of the French Jewish community.[1][2]
The organisation federates over 78 Jewish associations spanning cultural, religious, social and political spheres and positions itself as a defender against antisemitism while upholding republican values.[3]
History and evolution
CRIF emerged from clandestine meetings in 1943–1944 near Lyon to unify Jewish resistance against Vichy and Nazi persecution.[4]
As historian Samuel Ghiles-Meilhac notes in his analysis of its origins: "The CRIF became the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France in 1972."[5] The article details its shift from post-war focus on communal and religious issues to strong commitment to Israel through financial and political support.
Ghiles-Meilhac describes the early debates: "In the first years of the twentieth century, the Zionist movement was weak, divided and marginal in France. French Jews were highly suspicious of the movement."[5]
Role and activities
CRIF acts as the official interlocutor with the French state, organises the annual CRIF dinner attended by the President, and campaigns against antisemitism while supporting Israel.[6]
It is the French affiliate of the World Jewish Congress.[7]
Pro-Israel stance and criticism
CRIF generally supports Zionism and Israel, though it has occasionally distanced itself from specific Israeli policies, such as refuting Ariel Sharon's 2004 calls for French Jewish emigration.[8]
Critical perspectives view CRIF as a key component of France's pro-Israel lobby. Serge Halimi and Pierre Rimbert write: "The pro-Israel lobby in France is a similarly broad coalition, including established organisations such as the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF), which is aligned with Likud."[9]
