Fiyaz Mughal is a former politician who has been actively involved in counter-extremism initiatives since 2005. He was appointed to the Working Group for Communities that was linked to the Extremism Task Force Group set up by Tony Blair following the 7/7 bombings in 2005.
Mughal was previously an elected Councillor in Oxford (2002-2004) and Haringey (2006-2010) and Deputy President (2007-2008) of the Liberal Democrats political party in the UK. He campaigned to be the 2008 Liberal Democrat candidate for London Mayor but lost to Brian Paddick.[1] It is worth noting that Tell MAMA, a project founded by Mughal, commenced in 2012, when the Liberal Democrats were in government. It received substantial government support with £214,000 worth of funding announced by then Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg on 8 November 2012.[2] Mughal is no longer active in any party.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. He was awarded an OBE in 2009 in recognition of his services to the voluntary sector.[3]
He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the annual No2H8 Crime Awards.[4]
He has been a vocal critic of some Muslim grassroots organisations. At a Home Affairs Committee meeting on Tuesday 13 December 2016 he attacked both CAGE and MEND, accusing them of attacking Tell MAMA because they perceived the organisation to be “Jew friendly”. The full committee hearing can be viewed here.
