Targets:
International Marxist Group, Irish Solidarity Campaign

Alan Nixon is the cover name used by a former undercover officer with the Special Demonstration Squad who was deployed into the International Marxist Group and the Irish Solidarity Campaign from 1969 to 1972.[1] For the purposes of the Undercover Policing Inquiry and Operation Herne, they are also referred to by the cipher HN340 (for the N cipher system see N officers).

In the Undercover Policing Inquiry

  • 15 Jan 2018: 'Minded-to' grant restriction order over real name; no application in relation to cover name which will be published in due course.[2] Mitting stated that HN340 was deployed against one group 1969-72, and reported on others, that there was no known allegation of misconduct, and that HN340 is currently a widower in his 70s.[3]
  • 26 June 2018: cover name and targets published.[1]
  • 9 July 2018: provisional decision to restrict real name and[4] directed that any objections to Mitting's intention to restrict the real name to be made by 20 July 2018.[5]
