The Bank of Scotland was incorporated out of an Act of Parliament in 1695, to form Scotland's first commercial bank [1].
In 2001 it merged with Halifax Plc to become HBOS Plc, one of the biggest banks in the UK that could challenge the big-four clearing banks [2].
