Controversies
Charlotte Leslie: Tory MP’s sudden change of heart over tax-avoidance donor
In February 2015 it was revealed that Leslie reversed a pledge to hand back a £5,000 donation from Hugh Sloane. Leslie made her decision known to the public that she wouldn't be accepting the payment, but shortly after she changed her mind. The Independent reported that Leslie had mistakenly understood Sloane to have been found guilty of tax evasion hence why she initially decided to return the money. [3]
On the news that Leslie decided to retain the donation, she stated that 'it is clear this was not tax evasion, and that there was no criminal prosecution of Hugh Sloane ... given this, I will not be returning the donation.' [3] In response to this controversy Leslie declined to comment, but a Conservative spokesman said: 'All donations to the Conservative party are properly and transparently declared to the Electoral Commission, published by them, and comply fully with Electoral Commission rules.'
