Tony Williams is the alias of an undercover officer with the Special Demonstration Squad, who was deployed 1978-1982 against the Revolutionary Communist Tendency and Direct Action Movement.[1] The Undercover Policing Inquiry chair, John Mitting, described Williams' deployment as 'unremarkable'.[2] On 30 July 2018 a final ruling was made that HN20's real name cannot be published by the Inquiry.[3][4]

In the Undercover Policing Inquiry
- 11 January 2018, directed that restriction orders applications to be submitted by end of Jan 2018.[5]
- 7 March 2018: further information sought by Inquiry before making a decision.[6]
- 26 April 2018: Mitting minded to publish cover name but restrict real name on grounds that releasing the real name would not assist the Inquiry meet its terms of reference.[2]
- 1 May 2018: cover name published.[1]
- 3 July 2018: Inquiry says Mitting is still minded to restrict the officer's real name[7] and publishes the open application (dated 8 April 2018) to this effect from the Metropolitan Police.[8] It was also directed that any objections to Mitting's intention to grant the restriction order to be made by 20 July 2018.[9]
- 30 July 2018: final ruling that real name cannot be published.[3]
